S.W.A.T.’s Drill #12

This morning over at S.W.A.T. drill #12 is a sketch challenge with a twist…use only patterned paper, no solid cardstock.
Here is the sketch:
SWAT Sketch Drill 12

You have until the end of the month to link up for a great prize!  Check out all the details and some great inspiration by the design team here.
I did a layout using Echo Park Country Drive.

Drill 12

I used my brand new Cameo to cut a bunch of shapes: sentiment, sun, clouds and a circle.  You will also notice Twinery twine, stickles and UmWow Studio chipboard pieces:  layered clouds and butterfly.  I threw in some cute cloud washi tape, I can’t remember where I picked it up…  This layout, although it is hard to see in the picture, has a bunch of doodling on it.  It is actually the most doodling I have ever done on one project.  I used a Tim Holtz Distress marker.

IMG_8120 IMG_8121

Oh and I almost forgot…stickles!!  (Sorry about the pictures…it is so hard to capture the true sparkliness of stickles!!)

IMG_8122 IMG_8119

Hope you are inspired!!  I can’t wait to see your interpretation of the sketch!!

Moon Rising

I am always intrigued by 7 Gypsies products and have even tried a piece here and there, a printers tray here and a charm there… my July kit for Scrappy Chic had some 7 Gypsies in it and I was excited to see it!!  My last trip to Los Angeles produced a couple of cool shots of palm trees.  This photo was at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery where we went to watch Alfred Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much.  A cemetery for a movie you ask???  why yes and it was more fun than the drive in!!

Moon Rising

7 Gypsies Travel Collection: Rue, Terre and Continental along with some of the minim file folders.  I also used May Arts Jute, burlap twine and leaf ribbon, VLVS! line of chevrons, gesso, cheese cloth, button, Distress Paint, Distress Ink, UmWow Studio flair: wild flowers, thickers, embossing powder, Cameo, glimmer mist and a mini clothes pin.

I did some journaling on the 2 tags tucked in the file folders.

Cocoa Creations Challenge #9

This week it is about resolutions…Corrie says she has 20 rolls of washi (well I ring in at 84) and she has never used any of it.  Her challenge is to use up some washi tape or even make your own, but include it on your project.
I made this CAS (clean and simple) card.  CAS is not my typical style but I really like the simplicity of the colors.

IMG_8176

I used MME Miss Caroline for the card base and Bazzil for the layer with all the washi tape.  May Arts jute, VLVS! stamp and high gloss embossing powder, archival ink and Fiskars corner punch.

So if you have some washi tape head over to Crop Chocolate and get the details for this weeks challenge.  Let’s see what you got!

ATC Swap

My first design team was with Crop Chocolate, it was an HONOR!  Amber, Jon and McCall were AMAZING to work with.  I met the most talented ladies and made some GREAT friends!  I served a second term on that team and that term would have just been coming to an end in June.  Crop Chocolate had to make a hard decision and they shut the retail doors of the site so that meant the design team, for all intents and purposes, would end too.  Well we, the team,  weren’t ready to end it quite yet so we are hosting weekly challenges over at Crop Chocolate and banding together to keep all of the followers inspired.  It is a great group of ladies!!
When you get to know people and work with them for a while you appreciate each persons style and learn how their personality is expressed through what they create.  The team and our leader, Amber, decided to end our official term with an ATC swap so we would all be able to have a piece of each others art, 17 total!
Our theme for the swap was SPRING and here is what I came up with.

IMG_7435

I used the small version of my FAVORITE stamp from VLVS!, spotted butterfly and stamped to make the butterfly look like it was flying.  The flowers are cut with Tim Holtz Tattered Floral movers and shapers out of dictionary pages.  The centers of the flowers are Distress Stain-Worn Lipstick and a brad from MME Indie Chic.  I finished the design with a splatter of Tattered Angels glimmer mist and some gems.  I didn’t feel it was quite done so I doodled around the edges.  VIOLA!

IMG_7441

Check back soon to see all the  beautiful ATC’s these talented ladies are swapping...they are going in the mail so I should get them soon!!

May Arts Design Team Call Round 2

dtcall
I am very excited to have made it through round one of the call May Arts has out to be a Prima Ribbonista!!!  Today, for round 2, I am going to share a mini album I made with chipboard and several beautiful May Arts ribbons.

Ribbon Basket Weave Mini

I decided to make a 4” x 6” mini album and I started with an 81/2” x 11” sheet of chipboard.

1 Album

I wanted my spine to be about an inch so I cut my base chipboard piece to 9” x 6”, marked lines at 4” and 5”, scored with my bone folder and a metal ruler, and folded.  I used kraft card stock for the binding.  I cut a 5” x 6” piece (scored at 2” and 3” then folded) for the back and a 12” x 6”  piece (scored at 2”, 3”, 4”, 5”, 6”, 7”, 8”, 9” and 10” then folded).  At the end of both of these piece there should be 2” sections, these will be attached on top of each other for the binding.  I used Miracle Tape, I love this stuff!!  I have it in every size available.  You should end up with an accordion in your spine, this is where you will end up attaching your pages.  Set this base aside and grab some May Arts RIBBON!!

2 Weaving

I used 4 different ribbons to create my basket weave.  Pink Chevron, diagonal stripe, faux canvas, solid ivory check.  I used cork board and pins to layout my ribbon to weave.  The chevron is the base so I measured out pieces 2” bigger than the overall length of the album.  I wanted the chipboard to show through so I left a little space and calculated I needed 6 pieces.  I pinned these ribbons down so they would not move too much while I was weaving.  I used the other ribbons to do the weaving.  These pieces were also cut 2” longer that the 6” height of the album.  I wanted to chevron to be the binding and I wanted to wrap it around and attach the binding and tie a big bow so I cut this piece a bit longer.  This is where I started by measuring the middle and weaving this piece in.  I used the chipboard to make sure I measured correctly and then pinned where the ends would be.   Next I determined the ribbon pattern I wanted and wove the pieces in the same on both sides. **If your ribbons are not the same on both sides you need to weave with the wrong side up.

3 Attaching

Time for more Miracle Tape…I put strips where ever there was ribbon that could move and where there was ribbon woven both ways.  The I placed the chipboard on top and pressed down.  I started in the middle and then did each side so I could make sure everything was smooth.

4 Inside

Carefully flip the album over and at each side put a strip of tape and fold over the flaps of ribbon and press down.  I added another piece of ribbon in the binding for contrast.  I attached the binding with more tape and ran the chevron and check ribbon between the accordion and back piece.

5
I attached some kraft cardstock on both sides to cover the ribbon ends.  I cut 8 3-3/4” x 5-3/4” pieces of patterned paper to be attached to each side of the accordion to make the pages.  I also cut 2 additional matching pieces for the inside covers.  I added some May Arts Jute to the binding, woven on the outside and wrapped in the middle of the accordion to help stabilize it.

6

I finished by tying a big bow.

Now for a little bit of embellishing (my favorite part ;) )…  I used an UmWow Studio chipboard piece, the bluebell.  The flowers are coating with Piccolo enamel.  I fussy cut 2 butterflies I stamped with VLVS! small spotted butterfly and added some stickles.

Finished 4

Viola!!

Finished close

I will be working on filling this mini album this summer.  My vision for it is to be all about my favorite things…that should be super fun to do!!

Thanks so much for stopping by!  I hope you are inspired to create you very own mini album with a gorgeous ribbon basket weave cover.  And check back to see how the pages turn out.  Oh and wish me luck!!!  I have all my fingers crossed!!
